As a marketing consultant for upcoming brands I had approached Indian August initially to retail a brand. After visiting the store I decided to feature it, as it proudly spelt ‘Made in India’ in everything it displayed; creating a well required niche for itself in Delhi’s satellite town- Noida.
While entering the store one notices a myriad of Indian saris and stoles flanked on both sides which can be accentuated with their eclectic pieces of semi precious jewellery. The wooden toys for toddlers, embroidered canvas bags for college girls or artsy-craftsy women, decorative items for the living room or your dining area, khadi shirts for men along with a good selection of hand embroidered, block printed bedcovers and cushion covers at this brick and mortar store makes it a haven for shopaholics and connoisseurs, alike.
All through the my walk with Sanjogita Kaul, the mind behind this concept store, she told me about her previous administrative experience at NIFT (New Delhi) spanning over two decades and the connections made in that duration. This social enterprise seemed like a natural transition for a lady who is happy to connect the dots between the urban woman, under privileged artisans and the promising design students, in the name of revival.
Staying true to its name, I noticed Indian August adhering to ethical fashion. It likes to be associated with the Slow Fashion Movement, supporting the handcrafted which is locally made following fair trade practices. Sanjogita agrees of it being a longer process but feels strongly about delivering a product which lasts longer and is made with love; reducing carbon footprint and pollution output in the bargain.
Eagerly mapping the length and breadth of India, Indian August reaches out to many more with its e-store. It’s surely an address I’ll log onto for something distinctly Indian yet not too ethnic to be delivered at my doorstep!!!
