One late night I received an email from Kabir Singh with a crisp introduction and an e-brochure of his family’s creative enterprise the shop. Previously had only heard of this iconic (first) store nestled squarely in Connaught Place, Delhi. Seemed uncanny to have earlier that day read in Perpetual City (a short biography of Delhi) by Malvika Singh, of this area’s transformation from a ridge covered with Kikar trees, populated with jackals and wild pigs, into a landscaped showpiece of Lutyen’s Delhi.

Waiting around for Kabir‘s wife Aishwarya at their new store in Meherchand Market, New Delhi, I observed the expats being drawn to the classic contemporary affordable luxury. The e-brochure portrayed their penchant for Jacobean embroidery designs of English influence. To be in vogue with the west the husband-wife duo is slowly incorporating indigenous art and design; on the other hand yet digging into their archives for decades old inspirations.

Primarily an export house, at their factory I was told of their preference for discharge printing over pigment printing as it makes the pure fabric softer and lighter, and is a laborious but expensive process. Open spaces for enough natural light and circulation of air made the workshop’s atmosphere cheerful. Solar heaters for water, rainwater harvesting for resuse and recharge of local groundwater, treatment of all effluents and fair trade practices helped in admiring their end product even more. Proclaiming to be an ethical brand, it was an assortment made of excess cloth and great aesthetics which nailed it.

And how can I forget to mention the shop‘s flagship store made of fly ash eco-friendly bricks and painted with lime stone for its anti-bacterial properties!

Since some European fashion magazines are speaking highly of their stuff, I highly recommend attending the shop‘s Mal event from the 23rd24th & 25th April’15. I am going for some cotton voile nightwear, cotton bed and kitchen linen, textured cotton table linen and designer ceramic tableware from Pondicherry – sprucing up for summers you see!!
